12.08 Week Four / Session Two

Deciding on Posters to Refine and Develop

After printing the posters that I liked the most in A2, I decided to work on these two and refine them for the interim two presentation. It is a lot different seeing them A2 size, I think it is easy to tell what they are about from far away, but some things are hard to distinguish such as the figure of the students in both posters. Seeing my posters next to everyone elses also made me realise how reliant on the text my posters are, I am unsure as to whether this is good or bad. I also need to bring in a grid.

The Same Visual Solution in Different Styles / Approaches

I have been pushing my ideas even further and trying to explore different possible approaches to my poster designs. Again, it has been challenging to realise that my concept and style are seperate and not glued together, and I think there is definitely still a lot more experimentation to be done. It is also difficult to move away from my own personal style. I hope to have as many different approaches as I can by Thursdays lesson so that I can get a valuable critique.

Iterations

I have been experimenting with different styles, colours and textures quickly and it has been forcing me to think about my subject matter in new ways. I have started to move away from relying so much on digital illustration because I have found that a drawn / painted style can convey the emotions I am trying to communicate a lot more effectively. I have found it challenging to move away from my preferred style and ideas, but it is definitely very beneficial. I will continue to work on more styles so that I have a broad range of material for critique on Thursday.

Exploring Different Styles and What They Achieve

I think one of the reasons why political street art such as Banksy's work is so effective, is because the act of street art itself is an act of rebellion. It is also in-your-face and people are faced with it whether they like it or not. The recognisable stencil style and hand painted text are styles I have been trying out.

05.08 Week Three / Session Two

Using Different Media

Inspired by Kaczynski, I have been using paint to make my designs more expressive, and I think it has been really effective! It makes my designs more powerful and adds to the pathos. I will continue to experiment with this technique along with others!

04.08 Week Three / Session Two

Exploring different styles

Patel Kuczynski uses satire in particular to make statements about what he believes is wrong in the world. He uses detailed paintings, but they do not detract from the simplicity of the idea and elements he uses. This has inspired me to start using materials that are not digital to create my images, which may end up being more expressive.

03.08 Week Three / Session One

Exploring language/word and Image

I have been looking at ways I can incorporate text into my design. I really like the idea of using sarcasm and contrast. I have been pushing myself to think of new ways to think about approaches to this, which has been interesting.
